5 Tips to help start your College Search

Research of the College is one of the first steps in planning for College. It requires time, research and trials and errors. Some students thought to some colleges and universities, long before the college planning process. Others come in the summer before their senior year having never thought much about where they would like to go to school.

As an independent college Advisor, I work with many of the students as they begin their planning for College and their research initial college. I am amazed how some know exactly what they want in a college experience, where others have the difficulty of defining what is really important for them in terms of a college or University. He became my job to help them sort their options.

How to start a search of the College which leads you to the schools which are the best fit for you academically, socially and financially?

1. Firstly think of places where you may enjoy spending over the next four years. Are you interested in a small rural town in New England or are you more than one person in the city? Weather is really a question or would you be content in Minnesota despite the cold winters? These questions will help you determine where you want to take into account when you begin your college search.

2. Then, think about the size. You like having teachers who love teaching and are more concerned with undergraduate students, they are research? You want to be part of the classes in the large conference or you prefer more debate. Answering these questions will give you an idea where your college search should go in terms of size.

3 Consider academic. You are a student strong who enjoys an academic challenge or you want to look at schools in your college search which will offer you more than a balance between academics and extra-curricular activities? If there is an area of interest that you feel you want to continue, you may want to schools that offer this particular major. Yet again, you will make determinations that will restrict the schools in your college search.

4 What extra-curricular activities? Perhaps you are a musician and want to participate in the Orchestra of the University or a high school athlete who is interested in playing college lacrosse. Or perhaps you are talented in the speech and debate and want a college with a team high forensics. Extracurricular activities are an important part of the College and should be part of your college search.

5. Fresh College must be taken into account, but do not necessarily limit your college search. It is important, when you start a list of colleges to have at least a few schools that you know are financially affordable. However, there is no reason why you may not consider a few schools that may be too expensive for your family afford without financial assistance. You may know never what kind of scholarships and financial aid may be available to you if you do not worry to add schools to your list and apply.
